In this workshop at form & concept gallery, students will be introduced to creative and innovative book structures using paper and a few basic tools. This workshop is presented in conjunction with the book art exhibition Superscript, on view at form & concept through July 13, 2019. This is a 4-day workshop where students have the opportunity to experience papermaking and sculpture building capturing light and shadow. We will use natural materials to create an armature then apply your handmade paper to the form. Various medium are available for your use such as sumi ink, kakishibu and indigo dye.

Make a beautiful lantern with a soft glow. Wabi-Sabi, the beauty found in nature, will be our inspirational thread. We’ll build structure with natural materials and apply handmade paper to your form. Kozo paper and electrical components are provided.

During this day long class you will learn how to use flax roving to shape a beautiful fiber bowl, box or collage. This is an easy and fun technique with endless possibilities. The finished dried sculpture can be embellished with materials of your choice such as ink, paint or stitching.

Spend a day making beautiful handmade paper during desert monsoon season. We'll make paper with Abaca (Musa textilis) and Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L) with the addition of summer plant fiber such as chimesa, dried grasses and onion skins and cottonwood bark. Your paper can be used for collage, book arts, printmaking and more.

The art of the book is vast, curious and so engaging. Enjoy a day of hand papermaking with the intention of creating a visual 'story book' by incorporating dye and ink, dipping, brushing and mark-making on the pages.
